Big Tech DAPs : Who has the most sway? Users? Reach?

Big Tech DAPs

One way of measuring the power & influence of major multinational corporations is by looking at Big Tech DAPs… that is, how many people, on average, use their products at least once a day, every day of their lives.

The sheer penetration of these megacorps might stun you… especially when you consider that the “% of world” column in the table below includes every man, woman, and child on earth… not just industrialized nations, not just “adults.” Every single person, including octogenarians in England and 2-year old infants in Africa.

Three companies actually touch more than 20% of the human population on earth (8 billion people) on a daily basis: Meta (Facebook), Alphabet (Google), and Apple (iPhone). FYI: DAPs are what analysts call Daily Average People. This used to be called DAUs — Daily Average Users. Same same.

Let me break it down for you, with data:

rank company DAPs % of world family of apps
1 Meta 3.3B 40% Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger
2 Alphabet 2.5B 30% Google Search, YouTube, gMail, Chrome, Google Maps
3 Apple 1.7B 20% iPhone, iCloud, App Store, Apple Pay, iMessage
4 TenCent 1.2B 15% WeChat (China)
5 ByteDance 1.1B 14% TikTok
6 Amazon 0.8B 10% Amazon.com, Prime, Alexa, Kindle
7 Snap 0.4B 5% SnapChat
8 Microsoft 0.3B 4% LinkedIn, Office365

Now, you might want to think about exactly how these corporations choose to wield their power. Obviously, as capitalist entities required by law to “increase shareholder value,” their primary objective is to make more money.

But, given that the majority of these services feel “free,” you may be surprised as to how that money is actually made.

One key point for you to grok: You don’t actually own any of it — not your data, and certainly not the hardware that you bought. Read about how Apple, Amazon, Google and Tesla own, manage, manipulate, sell and profit from your “private” data.
