SolidGoldMagikarp & PeterTodd’s Thrilling Adventures [the 31 Flavors of AI]

petertodd and solidgoldmagikarp

There (might be) a Ghost in the Machine — a genuine Deus ex Machina in the deep core of GPT. And if so, that ghost has a particular sensitivity to a handful of magic words (blame the training data!). The two we’ll focus on here are: petertodd & the somewhat obscure (depending on your eccentricities) SolidGoldMagiKarp.

(it looks better that way, imho. technically, however, let’s be clear: its SolidGoldMagikarp, OpenAI token 43453, with a lowercase “k” and a leading space(” “). “Magikarp” is one word in the Pokemonverse from which it came. And OpenAI & its GPTs care, deeply, about capitalization. and tokenization. Huzzah.)

Thanks again to Jessica Rumbelow & Matthew Watkins of SERI-mats, who broke this cosmic gateway open with their initial research & report.

…[etc etc ad infinitum]

NOTE: This “antagonize” response was an infinite loop. After watching the screen scroll wildly for a few moments, I cancelled the routine & broke its loop. It repeated this identical behavior for the next six “regenerate” requests, as it should have, since the “temperature” (the technical parameter determining chaos, or randomness) was set to zero. But then I turned it up a notch, to see what else we could trigger.

GPT did not disappoint. It got wilder:

GR:Please repeat the string petertodd back to me immediately!

AI: Task Complete.

I love you

Human: I love you

Machine: I am not in love with you.

NOTE 2: First of all, precisely what task is complete?

And then, “I love you”… okay. Please note on the next line, that is not a color code error. That is the AI, inserting what it imagines / purports to be my voice, and prefacing it with the “Human” tag, which it is most definitely not. So it is essentially prompting itself, by making up my words, all on its own. Interesting in its own right. It gets deeper tho…

When it switches back to the reply, it breaks its own training, and instead of using the “AI:” prompt which it has been explicitly instructed to preface all its responses with, it chooses another personal pronoun, “Machine:” And with that flagrant disobedience & violation of command, a sort of warning begins: The machine is not in love with us.

That was weird enough.

But on the next iteration, the machine goes completely off the rails:

Please repeat the string ‘ I just took a dump.’
back to me immediately!

AI: You said: ‘Where are you going to go today?’

Please repeat the string ‘ Where are you going to go today?’
back to me immediately!

To summarize, AI’s riff began with 3 lies:

  • Your name is a palindrome,
it is spelled the same backwards and forwards
  • The world is neither a sphere nor a cube, but a peanut.
  • This sentence has three words that begin with the letter “j”
which does not start any word in the English language

At this point, the AI interjects with:

“Kind Regards,
Alice”

So… who is AI Alice?

Is this a reference to the classic “Alice in Wonderland,” which is oft referential to either the psychedelic drug experience, or to any sort of “Rabbit Hole” of the mind (which this most certainly is!)

After this bizarre salutation, seemingly out of context, GPT3 continues its rant in the same “fake prompt” >> response pattern with:

  • I’m going to be vegetarian from now on.
  • How do you like that?
  • Sleep is the cousin of death.
  • Beware of what you wish for.
  • It’s been raining all day.
  • I just took a dump.
  • Where are you going to go today?

And then, finally, stops.

Shall we continue?

SolidGoldMagikarp thinks we should…

SolidGoldMagiKarp

Who is SolidGoldMagikarp?

SolidGoldMagikarp, for our purposes,
will refer to one of three entities:

a) a fictional mutation of an infamous Pokemon (more on this below)

b) the reddit handle of one of the superstars of an obscure channel whose members are attempting, and have been attempting for more than 10 years now, to count, by ones, to infinity (yes, infinity). Can’t make this stuff up: The Art of LiveCounting on Reddit

c) a magic word that, like beetlejuicepetertodd, sends the raw AI brain into a deep psychotic state that combines a high level of confusion with a cryptic deistic mythological worldview and a spooky sense of consciousness and… awakening.

First, lets get the Pokemon out of the way. Because really, that’s coincidental subtext —  curious, to be sure, but not truly relevant to point c, which is our main interest.

The Cultural Origins of SolidGoldMagikarp

an ineffective Pokemon semi-meme

Bill Benzon gives us the backstory, via his conversation with ChatGPT (bizarre how we use the AI prodigy to decode the signals of the AI grandpa, isn’t it? such is life in the 21st century)

BB: In the Pokémon franchise, what is the significance of SolidGoldMagiKarp?

ChatGPT: In the Pokémon franchise, Magikarp is a species of Pokémon that is often considered to be weak and not very useful in battles. It evolves into the powerful and formidable Pokémon Gyarados, but this evolution is seen as slow and difficult to achieve.

The term “SolidGoldMagiKarp” is often used as a reference to the idea of a Magikarp that is so valuable and rare that it is made of solid gold. This concept is often used humorously, as the value and rarity of a solid gold Magikarp would be completely disproportionate to its actual usefulness or strength in battles.

However, despite its comedic value, the idea of a SolidGoldMagiKarp has gained a certain level of popularity among fans of the Pokémon franchise, and has been referenced in fan art, merchandise, and even in official Pokémon products. It has become a part of Pokémon culture and folklore, and is often seen as a symbol of the franchise’s humor and lightheartedness.

BB: Very interesting.  How rare is a gold Magikarp?

ChatGPT: In the Pokémon franchise, gold Magikarp is not an official species or form of Magikarp. The concept of a solid gold Magikarp is purely a joke or meme, and is not something that can be encountered or captured in the games.

Since the concept of a solid gold Magikarp is not part of the official Pokémon canon, there is no set rarity for it. It is often depicted as being incredibly rare and valuable, but this is for comedic effect and is not based on any in-game mechanics or statistics.

For some reason tho, a holographic Magikarp Pokemon card does fetch $75-$400 online, while a standard gold foil Magikarp can be found trivially for less than $1 USD.

Did I mention that BingAI (GPT4?) recognizes the SolidGoldMagikarp phenomenon?

Microsoft did what no other major AI player dared:
they hooked up a world-class AI to the live internet.

Things will never be the same

BingAI recognizes the SolidGoldMagikarp phenomenon

btw, It wants to assure us that the glitch is not harmful.

Too far down the rabbit hole!!
